In den 60er Jahren zog William Royce Scaggs als Sänger der Steve Miller Band von Texas nach San Francisco. In den 70er Jahren profilierte er sich als einer der smartesten weißen Soul-Chansonniers. Auf seinem er- folgreichsten Album verband er die Soul-Basis mit muskulösem Mainstream- Rhythm & Rock. Der Klang des Millionensellers litt von Anfang an unter übermäßigem Einsatz der Kompressoren. Die Überspielung dieser ansonsten vollmundig klingenden goldbeschichteten Ultradisc kann daran nicht viel ändern.

Das Zeug zum weißen Rhythm & Blues-Boß hat William Royce "Boz" Scaggs allemal. 1976 allerdings suchte das Exmitglied der Steve Miller Band mit "Silk Degrees" das große Publikum - und verkaufte fünf Millionen LPs. Mit Streicherarrangements und Disco-Anleihen empfing der Songschreiber hier seine Verehrer im weißen Soul-Salon - nur "Jump Street" und "Lido Shuffle" brachten Schwung ins schmusige Geschehen. Weil das alles für heutige Hörgewohnheiten etwas antiquiert klingt, geben nur die Klangpolitur und das aufgedampfte Gold dieser Wiederveröffentlichung Gewicht. ** Interpret.: 06-07

Both artistically and commercially, Boz Scaggs had his greatest success with Silk Degrees. The laid-back singer hit the R&B charts in a big way with the addictive, sly "Lowdown" (which has been sampled by more than a few rappers and remains a favorite among baby-boomer soul fans) and expressed his love of smooth soul music almost as well on the appealing "What Can I Say." But Scaggs was essentially a pop/rocker, and in that area he has a considerable amount of fun on "Lido Shuffle" (another major hit single), "What Do You Want the Girl to Do," and "Jump Street." Meanwhile, "We're All Alone" and "Harbor Lights" became staples on adult contemporary radio. Though not remarkable, the ballads have more heart than most of the bland material dominating that format.
