Als Import gab's den Strandjungen-Klassiker schon länger (siehe AUDIO 3/90). Doch diese Ausgabe, digital remastered, bietet knapp sieben Minuten mehr experimentellen Sunshine-Pop - die drei Bonus-Tracks Unreleased Backgrounds (reine A-cappella-Schnipsel), Hang On To Your Ego (ein Harmonika-bestimmter Pop-Song) und das Bläser-Instrumental Trombone Dixie. Ansonsten erklingt Souniges, neben den Golden Oldies Wouldn't It Be Nice und Sloop John B. das komplexe God Only Knows. Ein Meilenstein.

Sieben Jahre hat Captiol/USA gebraucht, um die Originalalben der wichtigsten amerikanischen Rockgruppe der mittsechziger Jahre, der Beach Boys, als CD herauszubringen. Fans, die nicht zu den zwischenzeitlich veröffentlichten Importen (siehe stereoplay 11/89) oder teuren Sonderpressung (stereoplay 9/89) gegriffen haben, werden für ihre Geduld jetzt doppelt und dreifach belohnt. Die klangtechnische Aufbereitung und besonders der redaktionelle Aufwand dieser Veröffentlichungen setzen Maßstäbe. Als Vorlagen dienten akribisch recherchierte, qualitativ optimale Bänder, die vor dem CD-Transfer "No Noice"-überarbeitet wurden. Und mit der Ausnahme von "Pet Sounds" überspielte man jeweils zwei LPs plus drei bis fünf Bonus-Tracks auf eine CD. Der auf einem Ohr taube Ober- Beach-Boy Brian Wilson mischte "Pet Sounds", sein stilbildendes Meisterwerk von 1966, nur in Mono ab. Die CD bietet nun drei bisher nie gehörte Zusatztitel und ein 24seitiges Booklet, das seinesgleichen sucht. Neben Reproduktionen der originalen LP-Vorder- und Rückseiten enthält es eine persönliche Einleitung von Brain Wilson, genaue Aufnahmedaten, eine detaillierte musikhistorische Würdigung des Albums sowie viele unbekannte Fotos. Dieselbe Liebe zum Detail spiegeln die Booklets von "Surfin' Safari / Surfin' USA" (CDP 7 93691 2, 1962/63, AAD, Mono/Stereo, 55:56, I:06-10, K:07-08, R:08), "Surfer Girl / Shut Down Vol.2 (CDP 7 93692 2, 1963/64, AAD, Stereo, 59:56, I:07-10, K:08, R:09), "Little Deuce Coupe / All Summer Long" (CDP 7 93693 2, 1963/64, AAD, Stereo, 59:30, I:08-10, K:08, R:09) und "Today! / Summer Days (And Summer Nights!)" (CDP 7 93694 2, 1965, AAD, Mono, 67:20, I:08-10, K:08-09, R:09). Auf diesen CDs prangt zudem das farbige Label der Captiol-Singles aus den 60er Jahren. Und das Schönste: Alle CDs werden in der Midprice-Kategorie angeboten. Für diese fünf Silberlinge (weitere Doppeldecker folgen) hat sich Captiol einen späten Tusch und den ersten Preis für die Pop-Wiederveröffentlichungsreihe des Jahres verdient.

The best Beach Boys album, and one of the best of the 1960s. The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound. Conventional keyboards and guitars were combined with exotic touches of orchestrated strings, bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, theremin, Hawaiian-sounding string instruments, Coca-Cola cans, barking dogs, and more. It wouldn't have been a classic without great songs, and this has some of the group's most stunning melodies, as well as lyrical themes which evoke both the intensity of newly born love affairs and the disappointment of failed romance (add in some general statements about loss of innocence and modern-day confusion as well). The spiritual quality of the material is enhanced by some of the most gorgeous upper-register male vocals (especially by Brian and Carl Wilson) ever heard on a rock record. "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows," "Caroline No," and "Sloop John B" (the last of which wasn't originally intended to go on the album) are the well-known hits, but equally worthy are such cuts as "You Still Believe in Me," "Don't Talk," "I Know There's an Answer," and "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times." It's often said that this is more of a Brian Wilson album than a Beach Boys recording (session musicians played most of the parts), but it should be noted that the harmonies are pure Beach Boys (and some of their best). Massively influential upon its release (although it was a relatively low seller compared to their previous LPs), it immediately vaunted the band into the top level of rock innovators among the intelligentsia, especially in Britain, where it was a much bigger hit.
