Als Import gab's den Strandjungen-Klassiker schon länger (siehe AUDIO 3/90). Doch diese Ausgabe, digital remastered, bietet knapp sieben Minuten mehr experimentellen Sunshine-Pop - die drei Bonus-Tracks Unreleased Backgrounds (reine A-cappella-Schnipsel), Hang On To Your Ego (ein Harmonika-bestimmter Pop-Song) und das Bläser-Instrumental Trombone Dixie. Ansonsten erklingt Souniges, neben den Golden Oldies Wouldn't It Be Nice und Sloop John B. das komplexe God Only Knows. Ein Meilenstein.

Pet Sounds wird oft mehr als ein Brian Wilson, denn als ein Beach Boys Album beschrieben. Während die Harmonien typisch für die Beach Boys sind, stammen doch die Texte vornehmlich von Wilson und auch der emotionale Ausdruck der einzelnen Songs ist erst durch seinen Leadgesang so einprägsam geworden. Im Vergleich mit den Voralben verkaufte sich Pet Sounds in den USA weniger gut, wurde jedoch in England ein großer Hit. Letztendlich waren Pet Sounds jedoch ein riesiger Schritt in der Entwicklung der Band.

Das Audio Fidelity Re-Issue nutzte die Original-Mono-Abmischung des Albums. Es wurde dabei ohne Rauschunterdrückung gearbeitet und auch leichte Schwächen des Masterbandes nicht digital korrigiert. Dennoch ein musikalischer wie auch klanglicher Leckerbissen. Wenn moderne Studioproduktionen aus dem Jahr 2009 nur annähernd so gut klingen würden, ginge es der Musikbranche wahrscheinlich besser. Das Album liegt im HDCD-Format vor.


One of the most acclaimed and influential albums of all time.  Recorded in 1965-66 and released in May of 1966, “Pet Sounds” is forever battling with the Beatles’ “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band” for the best album ever recorded.  George Martin, the Beatles’ producer, stated that “Without Pet Sounds, Sergeant Pepper wouldn’t have ever happened.”  “Pet Sounds” is Brian Wilson’s timeless gift to the world.   The album includes “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”, “Sloop John B.”, “God Only Knows”, “Caroline No” and other classics tracks as well as the Bonus Track, “Hang On To Your Ego”.   Audio Fidelity is using the original analog 1966 mix by Brian Wilson for the purest sound in 24 Karat Gold.  Faithful to the original release in all respects, this new version will be the ultimate PET SOUNDS. This disc has been mastered by Steve Hoffman.

The best Beach Boys album, and one of the best of the 1960s. The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound. Conventional keyboards and guitars were combined with exotic touches of orchestrated strings, bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, theremin, Hawaiian-sounding string instruments, Coca-Cola cans, barking dogs, and more. It wouldn't have been a classic without great songs, and this has some of the group's most stunning melodies, as well as lyrical themes which evoke both the intensity of newly born love affairs and the disappointment of failed romance (add in some general statements about loss of innocence and modern-day confusion as well). The spiritual quality of the material is enhanced by some of the most gorgeous upper-register male vocals (especially by Brian and Carl Wilson) ever heard on a rock record. "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows," "Caroline No," and "Sloop John B" (the last of which wasn't originally intended to go on the album) are the well-known hits, but equally worthy are such cuts as "You Still Believe in Me," "Don't Talk," "I Know There's an Answer," and "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times." It's often said that this is more of a Brian Wilson album than a Beach Boys recording (session musicians played most of the parts), but it should be noted that the harmonies are pure Beach Boys (and some of their best). Massively influential upon its release (although it was a relatively low seller compared to their previous LPs), it immediately vaunted the band into the top level of rock innovators among the intelligentsia, especially in Britain, where it was a much bigger hit.
