Fireball ist neben In Rock, Machine Head und den beiden Live-Wundertüten Made In Japan und Made In Europe eines der unsterblichen Klassikeralben der britischen Hardrock-Legende Deep Purple. Als das Werk 1971 erschien, stellte es gemeinsam mit den ersten Black Sabbath-Outputs das Härteste dar, was der Rockbereich zu bieten hatte. Wie schon auf In Rock angedeutet, verabschieden sich Purple fast vollständig von ihren psychedelischen Wurzeln und stellen Ritchie Blackmores phantastische, wilde Heavy-Blues-Gitarre in den Vordergrund. Ian Paice´ filigranes, stellenweise fast schon jazziges Drumming, Roger Glovers ausgefeilte, treibende Baßläufe und Jon Lords imposante Hammondorgel haben aber nach wie vor genügend Platz, um sich angemessen zu entfalten und Ausnahmesänger Ian Gillan eine Maßflanke nach der anderen auf den Leib zu zirkeln. Hardrock-Granaten wie "Fireball" oder "Demon´s Eye" sind ebenso zeitlose Hits wie die phänomenale Country-Ballade "Anyone´s Daughter" oder die spacigen Nummern "The Mule" und "Fools", mit denen Purple fast schon ein wenig wehmütig auf ihre Anfangstage zurückblicken. --Michael Rensen 

Zeitlich zwischen In Rock und Machinehead im Jahr 1972 gelegen ist dies zwar das fünfte Album von Deep Purple, doch erst das zweite mit der Mark II Besetzung. Zur bekannten Heavy Metal Mischung gesellte sich nun progressiver Rock und brachte die Engländer zum ersten Mal an die Spitze der britischen Album-Charts.
Das Album gilt heute als eines der vier essentiellen Deep Purple Alben (neben In Rock, Machinehead und Burn) und der Song Strange Kind of Woman bleibt bis heute in den Wiedergabelisten der Rockradiostationen.

Das Audio Fidelity ReMastering stammt von Steve Hoffman und der Titel erscheint als 24 Karat-Gold-CD mit zusätzlicher HDCD-Codierung. Das analoge Band war ganz offenbar in gutem Zustand und das klangliche Ergebnis ist warm und gleichzeitig mit der erhofften Durchhörbarkeit. Extrem geringes Grundrauschen, doch dieses sollte völlig egal sein, denn dieses Album MUSS laut gehört werden.

Released in 1971, Fireball was Deep Purple's fifth studio album and the second
with the Mk II lineup. It would become the first of the band's three UK #1 albums and
also certified Gold in the US. The album came betweeen 1970's In Rock and 1972's
Machine Head, a period considered by many to be Mark II's golden hour.  They added
a lot more progressive rock to their heavy metal drive and the result is brilliant.

This original US version includes the Top 10 UK hit, "Strange Kind of Woman."
 
Fireball is flawless, every thing works, from the organ melodies of Jon Lord, to the guitar
acrobatics of Ritchie Blackmore, the musicianship on this album is exceptional;  the charismatic
Ian Gillan's incredibly expressive singing, Ian Paice's powerful and gutsy work on the drums
and Roger Glover again lays down some heavy bass lines.

One of Deep Purple's four indispensable albums (the others being In Rock, Machine Head, and Burn), 1971's Fireball saw the band broadening out from the no-holds-barred hard rock direction of the previous year's cacophonous In Rock. Metal machine noises introduced the sizzling title track — an unusually compact but explosively tight group effort on which Jon Lord's organ truly shined. The somewhat tiring repetitions of "No No No" actually threatened to drop the ball next, but the fantastic single "Strange Kind of Woman" nimbly caught and set it rolling again, just in time for the innuendo-encrusted hilarity of "Anyone's Daughter," featuring one of singer Ian Gillan's first (and still best) humorous storylines to go with one of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's most uncharacteristic, bluesiest performances ever. "The Mule" opened the vinyl album's second side with what is perhaps Purple's finest instrumental, and on the hyper-extended "Fools," the bandmembers proved they could flirt with progressive rock without plunging off its cliff (although the song could probably have done without its drawn-out middle section). And closing the album was the exceptional "No One Came," where intertwining instrumental lines locked together beautifully, Gillan wove another entertaining yarn that was part autobiography and part Monty Python, and the often underrated skills of drummer Ian Paice helped the song sound so unreservedly fresh and intuitive that one could almost be convinced the band had winged it on the spot. Sure, the following year's Machine Head would provide Deep Purple with their commercial peak, but on Fireball, the formidable quintet was already firing on all cylinders.
