Laura Nyro gehört zu denjenigen Künstlern, deren Songs erst durch die Interpretation durch andere bekannt wurden. Barbara Streisand und Blood, Sweat & Tears profitierten und The Fifth Dimension sollten mit ihren Werken Hits abliefern. Die 1947 in New York geborene Amerikanerin wurde von David Geffen entdeckt, der seinen Job hinwarf um für dieses Ausnahmetalent als Manager agieren zu können. Die Musik von Laura Nyro läutete das Hippie-Zeitalter in New York ein. Die Grenzen zwischen Gospel, Jazz, Folk und Broadway verschwammen in ihren Aufnahmen vollständig.

Mit der Ausnahme des Titels Sexy Mama wurden alle Aufnahmen vor ihrem 25. Geburtstag im Jahr 1970 gemacht und dementsprechend sind auch die Masterbänder dieser Aufnahmen alt und durch häufige Verwendung abgenutzt. Mastering-Ingenieur Steve Hoffman weist explizit im Handbuch darauf hin, dass man vermieden hat Schwächen des Bandes zu überdecken und dafür größtmögliche Authentizität zu erreichen. Die 24-Karat-Gold CD ist mit HDCD codiert und fortlaufend nummeriert. Der Titel sei jedem empfohlen, der mit der Musik der späten 60er etwas anfangen kann.

"Time and Love: The Essential Masters" is an impressive retrospective of her work. The album compiles Nyro's distinctive renditions of sixteen of her most famous songs, as well as some lesser known selections from her songbook, only one of the recordings was made after 1970 before she was 25 years old.  The level of depth, insight, and intensity that emerged from a woman who was so young speaks to her incredible talent.
Every song is sung with joy, passion and pure belief - Nyro sang because it was in her soul to do so, she carries you along, celebrating her gifts as writer, pianist and vocalist. She wrote from her heart and soul and on her own recordings, she sang from there, too

As a 16-song, single-disc best-of, this does the job very nicely for those who want Nyro's best and most famous songs in one place. Only nine tracks into the CD you've already heard "Sweet Blindness," "Wedding Bell Blues," "And When I Die," "Blowin' Away," "Eli's Comin'," "Stoney End," and "Stoned Soul Picnic," which should be enough to convince anyone that Nyro was a major singer/songwriter. An argument could be made that, as an album-oriented performer whose career spanned about three decades, this is too brief a sampling of her discography, and too lopsided, as just one of the songs was recorded after 1970 (at which point she had yet to reach her 25th birthday). Still, the hard facts are that Nyro's best recordings and compositions were those from the beginning of her career. If you want greater breadth, there's the two-CD Stoned Soul Picnic: The Best of Laura Nyro compilation. But if a best-of's all you want, you don't lose much by springing for Time and Love instead, as disc two of Stoned Soul Picnic really isn't that good. Another good reason to consider this the first choice: Time and Love uses the original 1968 studio version of "Sweet Blindness" (a 1976 live rendition was used on Stoned Soul Picnic).
