Überall ist diese Sammlung als das "Brown Album" bekannt, und wenn der Name dieser hoch geschätzten Gruppe fällt, denkt man im Allgemeinen zuerst an dieses Album. Das zu vier Teilen aus Kanada und einem Teil aus Arkansas stammende Quintett kündigt hier mit diesem zweiten Werk mehr als mit ihren anderen Studioaufnahmen an, dass sie sich auf Erfolgskurs befinden. Hierbei ragen Stücke wie der Joan Baez Hit "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Across the Great Divide" und "Up on Cripple Creek" aus einem Dutzend anderer ebenfalls bemerkenswerter Tracks hervor. Weniger bekannte Originale der Gruppe wie das schmerzlich schöne "Whispering Pines" und das geheimnisvolle "Unfaithful Servant" spielen eine ganz entscheidende Rolle, wenn es darum geht, diesem Klassiker aus dem Jahre 1969 seinen einmaligen Charakter zu verleihen. Wenn man das hohe Niveau berücksichtigt, das von The Band und von dem noch besseren Vorgänger Music from Big Pink (1968) erreicht wurde, dann überrascht es einen nicht, dass die Band schon sehr früh als Gruppe mit ihren Aufnahmen ihren Zenit erreichte. Wie bei allen Neuauflagen der Alben von The Band sind auch hier eine Reihe von Tracks als Zugaben zu finden, obwohl es sich bei allen außer "Get Up Jake" um alternative Aufnahmen handelt, die bei der ursprünglichen Albumauswahl nicht berücksichtigt wurden. --
Dieses Re-Issue wurde von den Masterbändern durch Steve Hoffman neu abgemischt und auf einer 24-Karat-Gold-CD mit HDCD-Codierung angeboten. Auch wenn die Bilder der CD dies nicht sofort zeigen, so liegt selbstverständlich ein Booklet mit den damaligen Abbildungen bei.


Released in 1969, this famous classic is popularly known as the “Brown Album”.  This historic album put The Band in the mainstream consciousness and remains a timeless classic.  The Band was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and this is the album that put them there. Their influence on the music scene started as the backup band for Bob Dylan on his 1965-66 world tour and when they started recording on their own with a contract from Capitol Records, this, their second album, was the top of their creative spark.   The album features, “Up On Cripple Creek”, “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”, “King Harvest”, “Rag Mama Rag” and many more including the Bonus Track, "Get Up Jake".  Mastered for Audio Fidelity 24 Karat Gold from the analog Capitol master mixes by Steve Hoffman.

The Band's first album, Music from Big Pink, seemed to come out of nowhere, with its ramshackle musical blend and songs of rural tragedy. The Band, the group's second album, was a more deliberate and even more accomplished effort, partially because the players had become a more cohesive unit and partially because guitarist Robbie Robertson had taken over the songwriting, writing or co-writing all 12 songs. Though a Canadian, Robertson focused on a series of American archetypes from the union worker in "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)" and the retired sailor in "Rockin' Chair" to, most famously, the Confederate Civil War observer Virgil Cane in "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." The album effectively mixed the kind of mournful songs that had dominated Music from Big Pink, here including "Whispering Pines" and "When You Awake" (both co-written by Richard Manuel), with rollicking uptempo numbers like "Rag Mama Rag" and "Up on Cripple Creek" (both sung by Levon Helm and released as singles, with "Up on Cripple Creek" making the Top 40). As had been true of the first album, it was the Band's sound that stood out the most, from Helm's (and occasionally Manuel's) propulsive drumming to Robertson's distinctive guitar fills and the endlessly inventive keyboard textures of Garth Hudson, all topped by the rough, expressive singing of Manuel, Helm, and Rick Danko that mixed leads with harmonies. The arrangements were simultaneously loose and assured, giving the songs a timeless appeal, while the lyrics continued to paint portraits of 19th century rural life (especially Southern life, as references to Tennessee and Virginia made clear), its sometimes less savory aspects treated with warmth and humor.
