James Taylor dürfte den Inbegriff der Person eines Singer/Songerwriters darstellen. Wie kein anderer Künstler gelang es ihm den Übergang von den wilden 60er zu den introvertierteren 70er Jahren in den USA in Wort zu fassen und mit diesem Musikstil enorme Popularität zu erzielen. Taylor war bei Erscheinen dieses Albums 1972 nach Jahren der Heroinabhängigkeit, einem Motorradunfall bei dem er sich beide Hände brach und einem Labelwechsel von Apple Records zu Warner Music bereits ein Star und sollte 1972 noch den Grammy für den besten Gesang eines zeitgenössischen Werkes gewinnen.

Auf One Man Dog erlaubt sich James Taylor einige Experimente und die Besetzung und Liste der mitwirkenden Künstlern ist ebenfalls ungewöhnlich. Seine drei Geschwister Alex, Hugh, and Kate Taylor befinden sich eben so dabei wie Carole King, Michael Brecker, John McLaughlin und Linda Ronstadt. Enstprechend durchmischt ist auch das Album, dass zwar im Prinzip dem erfolgeichen Mix von Folk und Country folgt, doch auch immer völlig unerwartete Ideen aufgreift. So erleben wir Hits im Stile von Don't let me by Lonely Tonight neben experimentellen Musikstücken für Kettensägen.

Diese Album erschein als 24-Karat-Gold CD mit neuer Digitalisierung durch Steve Hoffman. Anders als geplant konnte das Album durch einen Umzug des Tonstudios leider nicht in HDCD codiert werden. Die Slipcases sind durchgehend nummeriert und das Album erscheint als Limited Edition.

Over the course of his career, singer-songwriter James Taylor has sold more than 40 million albums, and won more than 40 gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards as well as five GRAMMYs. He was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

James Taylor's fourth album was released in 1972 and it reached # 4 on the US Album charts. The recording is best described as a suite of brief musical experiments, 18 short pieces strung together, some of them instrumentals.  The variety of musical styles illustrate the depth and range of James Taylor's composition and performance genius.  The album features the hit "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight."

Stylistically, One Man Dog runs the gammut from James' familiar easy folk rock to country-flavored funk to smooth, bass driven jazz changes and everything in between.  The songs are playful, unpredictable, and timeless. The medley on side two features such things as chain saws, cross-cut saws and hammers to create a complex, layered rhythm. Absolutely beautiful from start to finish.

All the musicians give a stellar performance including long-time sidemen, Craig Doerge, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel, and Danny Kortchmar, and a virtual who's who of late-sixties, early-seventies folk rock musicians, with a little jazz thrown in such as Alex, Hugh, and Kate Taylor, Carole King, Carly Simon, Dash Crofts, John Hartford, Red Rhodes, Randy and Michael Brecker, John McLaughlin and Linda Rondstadt, as well as producer, Peter Asher.

A lot was riding on One Man Dog, James Taylor's follow-up to his two big hits, Sweet Baby James and Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon; this was released 21 months after the latter, a long time between records in those days. And what a letdown. One Man Dog contained 18 tracks, some of them instrumentals, many of them running less than two minutes. A lot of it was sketchy and seemingly unfinished, and none of it had the impact of the best songs on the last two albums. One Man Dog spawned a Top 20 hit in "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," and it made the Top Ten and went gold itself largely on the momentum of Taylor's career. But it disappointed fans, and in the 19 months it took him to record another album, Taylor was bypassed by the singer/songwriter movement.
