Ein Bond-Titelstück besitzt meist Hit-Garantie und hat, trotz unterschiedlicher Interpreten, immer einen spezifischen Stil! Das gilt auch für Garbage, die "The World Is Not Enough" anläßlich des 19. Abenteuers von 007 aufgenommen haben. Das Quartett, das stilistisch sonst eher dem Alternative-Sektor zuzuordnen ist, bewegt sich damit in der Tradition seiner Vorgänger (eindrucksvoll zu hören auf dem Sampler James Bond. The Best Of Bond). Verglichen mit dem Klassiker "Goldfinger" muß allerdings auch angemerkt werden, daß Garbage-Sängerin Shirley Manson stimmlich nicht die Klasse einer Shirley Bassey besitzt und der '99er Song deshalb kein Evergreen werden wird.
Wie steht es aber mit dem Score selbst? Der stammt, wie schon bei Tomorrow Never Dies, von David "Independence Day" Arnold. Hatte er beim 18. Auftrag des Geheimagenten Ihrer Majestät noch durch die Verquickung des typischen, orchestermäßig angejazzten Bond-Sounds mit elektronischen Elementen für frischen Wind gesorgt, so gibt es diesmal als Mix-Zutaten wechselweise Dance-Beats oder Rock. Das musikalische Thema des Garbage-Songs ist dabei das Leitmotive des Scores und wird immer wieder aufgegriffen. Referenzen an die Ur-Bond-Melodie von Monty Norman/John Barry tauchen indes nur zweimal auf. Originell, die dank der ehemaligen Transglobal Underground-Vocalistin Natasha Atlas arabisch-getönten Anspielungen in "Welcome To Baku". Fragwürdig bleibt dagegen, warum der völlig unpassende 19. Track, "Only Myself To Blame" von Scott Walker (Brothers), auf das Album gekoppelt wurde. Positiv erwähnenswert ist dagegen, daß diese (Multimedia-)CD den amerikanischen Film-Trailer als Bonus-Track enthält. --Thomas Hammerl

David Arnold's first Bond score, Tomorrow Never Dies, was better than the film itself, and better than Sheryl Crow's theme song, which was one of the lamest entries in 007's history. The World Is Not Enough, the sequel to Tomorrow Never Dies, is a different matter entirely. The film was directed by Michael Apted, meaning it's the first time in a long while that the Bond franchise was given an established director with a reputation for making challenging films. He hired a great cast -- not just Pierce Brosnan, but Robert Carlisle, Denise Richards, Sophie Marceau, Judy Dench, and John Cleese -- and let Arnold run wild. The result is a terrific soundtrack, filled with excitement, melodrama, and romance. Musically, he runs the gamut from jazzy lounge music to exciting orchestral outbursts underpinned by techno. He also gets a first-class theme song from Garbage -- they expertly modernized the classic Bond sound, while turning in a strong melodic tune -- and, even more impressively, coaxed Scott Walker to contribute a moody, loungey closing song, "Only Myself to Blame." It's not among his best songs, but it's hard hearing Walker at the end of the record and film and wish that he could have sung the main theme, as well, since his stylish baritone perfectly fits Bond. Still, that's nitpicking, since this is the best Bond soundtrack in a long time.
