Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, das selten zu den großen Doppelalben gezählt wird, mußte sich damit abfinden, in ein paar Millionen Plattensammlungen zu enden. Obwohl es so breit gestreut ist, daß es dem früheren, relaxteren Honky Chateau, oder dem späteren, penetranten Rock of the Westies nicht gleichkommt, kann es sich doch einer Menge brillianter und sehr kluger Pop-Musik rühmen: der augenzwinkernden Rebellion von "Bennie and the Jets" und "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting", der Konfektionsnostalgie von "The Ballad of Danny Bailey" und der undramatischen Melodiosität von "Harmony". --Rickey Wright

Zusammen mit den Beatles und Rolling Stones ist er der erfolgreichste britische Musiker aller Zeiten: Elton John. Eines seiner besten Alben veröffentlichte der begnadete Pop-Pianist 1973, als er schon längst Superstar-Status erlangt hatte. "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" enthält neben unbekannten Perlen Klassiker wie den Titelsong, "Bennie And The Jets" oder "Candle In The Wind", das 24 Jahre später mit neuem Text zur erfolgreichsten Single aller Zeiten avancieren sollte. Und wem die Lady-Diana-Hysterie vor zwei Jahren zuwider war, sollte sich den Song noch einmal mit zeitlichem Abstand anhören. Er wird erkennen müssen, daß der vermeintliche Schmachtfetzen eigentlich eine wunderschöne und gar nicht kitschige Ballade ist, die Elton John in der Originalfassung - vor seiner Stimmoperation - mit seinem hellen und biegsamen Timbre intonierte. Was die Klangqualität angeht: Wer im heimischen Plattenschrank bisher eine der meist schlecht gemasterten und dumpf klingenden "Best-Of-Lieblosigkeiten" stehen hat, wird begeistert sein von dem plastischen, voluminösen und vergleichsweise klaren Klang der beiden 180-Gramm-Scheiben. Besonders Elton Johns Stimme klingt angenehm warm. Leider sägen die hohen Frequenzen manchmal etwas in den Ohren, besonders bei "Saturday Night´s Alright For Fighting", einem den Rolling Stones nachempfundenen Rock´n´ Roll-Song mit treibendem Schlagzeug und Baß und verzerrtem Gitarrengewitter. Trotzdem insgesamt ein großes Vergnügen.

Der Paradiesvogel am Piano mit dem Brillen-Fimmel, Reginald Dwight alias Elton John, machte 1973 mit diesem tollen Doppelalbum das Klavier im Poprock endgültig salonfähig - und mit Hits wie Candle In The Wind oder Bennie And The Jets auch kräftig Kasse.

Stereoplay
Eine ohnehin schon gelungene Überspielung dieses Pop-Meisterwerkes von 1973 (DJM/Metronome 821 747-2, 2 CDs, 39:36, 36:46) hat Konkurrenz bekommen. Doch allenfalls im Mitten- und Tieftonbereich kann diese Edel-CD aus dem kalifornischen Santa Monica geringfügig zulegen. Den kauzigen und alternden Brillenenthusiasten Elton John dürfte soviel Interesse für sein Frühwerk trotzdem begeistern: Repertoirehöhepunkte wie der Titelsong oder "Candle In The Wind" kann er nun gleich zweimal versilbern. Wer allerdings nicht absoluter Elton-John-Fan ist, wird mit der unvergoldeten, preiswerteren und regalfüllenden Doppel-CD auch glücklich.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was where Elton John's personality began to gather more attention than his music, as it topped the American charts for eight straight weeks. In many ways, the double album was a recap of all the styles and sounds that made John a star. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is all over the map, beginning with the prog rock epic "Funeral for a Friend (Love Lies Bleeding)" and immediately careening into the balladry of "Candle in the Wind." For the rest of the album, John leaps between popcraft ("Bennie and the Jets"), ballads ("Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"), hard rock ("Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting"), novelties ("Jamaica Jerk-Off"), Bernie Taupin's literary pretensions ("The Ballad of Danny Bailey"), and everything in between. Though its diversity is impressive, the album doesn't hold together very well. Even so, its individual moments are spectacular and the glitzy, crowd-pleasing showmanship that fuels the album pretty much defines what made Elton John a superstar in the early '70s.
