Giants of Sting is the second volume of Music Video Distributors' Reggae Showdown DVD series, and it features a dizzying array of performers. The 2002 program includes dancehall greats like Beenie Man, resplendent in his sailor suit and spitting out the words so quickly that it becomes a hybrid rap-scat. The camera stays on the performers while the audio is not crystal clear — sounding more like an audience tape than a direct board feed. The concept, developed by Isaiah Laing as far back as 1984, was to produce quality and affordable stage shows delivering maximum entertainment. The "Sting" event is called "The Greatest One-Night Reggae Show on Earth" — which is, of course, open to debate. What is here, though, is a very strong collection of material captured during this major event. There are multiple cameras, but the cuts are slow and methodical, creating a feeling as if it is a one-camera shoot. There are no liner notes to the package, and no bonus tracks or interview footage. Presenting each of the 11 performers on a single menu is intriguing and convenient, and allows viewers to play any segment of this two-hour program at their leisure. What Giants of Sting lacks in packaging and production the concert makes up for in the performances.
