Review by Dan Cooper
Oo-ooh, what a little remastering can do. Two Nashville Sound LPs from the downside of Pierce's career feature Webb singing more of other people's hits than his own. But reissued Mofi-style, Pierce and the echo chamber sound great.

Sands of Gold

Review by Greg Adams
Webb Pierce's '60s albums are all cut from the same cloth — some are better than others, but if you like one you'll probably like them all. Sands of Gold yielded three Top 20 country hits: the dreamy, tropical-flavored "Sands of Gold," the perfectly wistful "Those Wonderful Years," and "If the Back Door Could Talk," which, despite its modern production flourishes, sounds like a song Pierce would have recorded in the '50s. Although many critics act as though Pierce fell off the earth after 1959, he was still a very visible and commercially relevant country artist at this point, and the title track even bubbled under the pop Top 100. The album tracks are mostly covers of other recent country and pop favorites, such as the number one hits "Don't Let Me Cross Over" and "Roses Are Red (Violets Are Blue)," but Pierce has such a unique voice it's fun to hear him walk through these performances. Sands of Gold is one of Pierce's best albums of the '60s, and was remixed and reissued on CD with the album Sweet Memories in 1993.

Sweet Memories

Review by Greg Adams
Sweet Memories is a typical '60s album for Webb Pierce, containing a few originals aimed at the singles market and too many covers of recent country hits. Pierce himself scored no hits this time around, but turned in competent versions of "Wolverton Mountain," "Love's Gonna Live Here Again," and "Welcome to My World." "The Champ" is a tedious recitation with narration by Jackie Fargo, and the title track is a slow shuffle with a weak hook. Pierce had a real gift for picking chart-bound material, but he struck out this time around. Sweet Memories was remixed and reissued on CD with the album Sands of Gold in 1993.
