Auf einmal waren sie da und keiner konnte sich gegen "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" wehren. Eiffel 65 könnten ein gutes Beispiel für eine geklonte "Europop" Band sein, doch versuchen sie auf ihrem Debütalbum das Gegenteil zu beweisen. Dies gelingt zwar nicht immer -- "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" ist immer allgegenwärtig -- doch startet schon der Opener ziemlich spacy. "Too much of Heaven" klingt nach Ibiza Chill Out, nicht nach Pop. Ebenso "cool" kommt "Living in a Bottle", eine erwachsene Popballade im Midtempo-Bereich rüber. Die Singleauskopplung "Move your Body" zielt wieder auf den Dancepopkäufer: die reichlich bekannten Vocoder Effekte in den Vocals und das Italo-Piano Geklimper kennt man mittlerweile!

Ein bißchen böse waren die Jungs auch und rippten für die Hookline von "My Console" dieselbige von Yazoos "Don't Go". Aber zugegebenermaßen klingt es gar nicht mal so schlecht. Wenn schon 80er Jahre, dann darf auch ein Depeche-Mode-Verschnitt nicht fehlen: "Your Clown" könnte auch von den Ikonen des Synthiepop abstammen -- Vocals und Arrangements klingen verblüffend danach! Zum guten Ende des 13-Track-Albums kommt nochmal ein wenig "Blue..."-Feeling auf -- "Hyperlink (Deep Down)" hämmert sich mit Dreiviertel-Takt-Basslines und den vorhin schon erwähnten, mit Effekten gespickten Vocals in die Ohrmuscheln.

Produziert ist "Europop" recht aufwendig, kein Track ist so richtig schlecht, und das Singen haben die drei Jungs aus Italien (oder zumindest der Leadsinger) auch ganz gut drauf. Es muß also niemandem peinlich sein, "Europop" im CD-Regal stehen zu haben. --Mark Hartmann

Eiffel 65's vocoder-heavy Europop, which yielded the major international dance smash "Blue (Da Ba Dee)," falls somewhere in the dance music spectrum between Daft Punk and the Vengaboys. It employs funky, deep house grooves with vocoder enhanced vocals, similar to Daft Punk and Modjo, yet many of the songs incorporate nursery rhyme choruses and solid pop stylings. The album has its share of "Blue" sound-alikes, some better than others. For example, "Dub in Life," "Another Race," "Hyperlink (Deep Down)," and the unremarkable second single "Move Your Body" all sound like "Blue" and offer very little else. "Silicon World," on the other hand, also recalls their hit, but takes the formula into a much cooler and sophisticated direction. This album really succeeds, however, when the formula is stretched and the act tackles different musical styles. "Too Much of Heaven" is an intelligent, funky, anti-capitalist dance song, and "Living in a Bubble" is an interesting, string-enhanced hip-hop track. "Your Clown" is gothic and dark, and unmistakably recalls Depeche Mode. "Now Is Forever" is a trippy, shuffling slice of house, and "Europop," despite its title, is the album's acid house representative. Eiffel 65 will mostly be remembered for its hypnotic smash "Blue," however, and its less than stellar follow-up "Move Your Body." But if one digs deeper, then this album offers several surprises and interesting dance grooves.
