Als Jennifer Lopez 1997 in dem Film Selena den großen Tejano-Star Selena Quintanilla spielte hätte sie nicht gedacht, daß sie selbst einmal eine berühmte Latino-Sängerin werden sollte. Mit On The 6 schaffte sie es auf einen Schlag. Die schöne Puertoricanerin liefert feinsten Latino-Soul, vergleichbar mit der Musik von Gloria Estefan. Kein Wunder, legte doch auch Glorias Gatte Emilio Estefan nicht unwesentlich Hand an die Songs der Schauspielerin (U-Turn, Out Of Sight).
Weitere Promis wie Puff Daddy oder Rick Wake (Celine Dion) sorgten für ein rundum gelungenes Debüt-Album, auf dem die verschiedensten musikalischen Einflüsse in ein Latino-Gewand gekleidet wurden. Skeptikern, die der Leinwandheldin kein Talent als Musikerin zutrauen, sei gesagt, daß Frau Lopez schon vor ihrer Schauspiel-Karriere als Sängerin und Tänzerin gearbeitet hat. Mit On The 6 erfüllte sich die 28jährige einen Traum. Und traumhaft schön ist das Ergebnis anzuhören. Vor allem die Hitsingle "If You Had My Love", "No Me Ames" (das Duett mit Latin-Superstar Marc Anthony gibt’s gleich in zwei Versionen) oder der Party-Stomper "Let’s Get Loud". --Dirk Ruschepaul

Müssen Filmstars singen? Und braucht die Welt Tribute-Compilations? Weder noch. Außer es ist Robert Mitchum, der singt. Oder eine Compilation, an der kein Ex-Beatle, kein Wet Wet Wet und kein Elton John mitwirkt. En detail bleibt zu sagen, daß Jennifer Lopez natürlich nicht so toll wie Robert Mitchum (oder Ann Magret) singt, daß ihre CD langweilig-korrekt im Swing unserer Tage produziert wurde und einschlägige Routiniers wie Puff Daddy und Gloria Estefan daran mitwirkten, daß Frau Lopez auf den sieben Fotos des Booklets saugut aussieht und sie sogar einige der Lyrics selbst verfaßt hat. @Normal:Mit dem Swing der zu Ehren Marvin Gayes eingespielten Compilation verhält es sich ein wenig anders. Er hat Soul. Kompetente R&B-Stars wie Brian McKnight, Gerald LeVert und DeBarge interpretieren Marvins Songs äußerst respektvoll, geradezu werkgetreu. ªWir haben ðYour Precious LoveÐ am 2. April aufgenommen´, erzählt Erykah Badu. ªDas ist zufällig Marvin Gayes Geburtstag. Ich war extrem nervös. Denn wir waren außerdem im gleichen Studio, in dem Marvin und Tammy Terrell damals ðYour Precious LoveÐ aufnahmen. Es hatte etwas göttliches.´ Erikah Badus Duett mit D'Angelo ist in ähnlicher Weise gelungen wie fast alle Songs dieser Compilation. Sie halten Distanz durch ihre Nähe zum Original. Sie sind nicht überraschend, anders, ªoriginell´. Klar, sie swingen. Klar auch, daß beispielsweise Montell Jordans Version von ªI Want You´ kühler klingt als die Marvin Gayes. Ist ja auch die einzige Chance, damit klarzukommen. Wehmütiger, fordernder, sexplosiver als Marvin Gaye kann sowieso kein Mensch auf dieser Welt diesen Song singen. Eine würdevolle Verbeugung, diese Tribute-CD. Ob die Welt sie braucht, weiß ich nicht.

Jennifer Lopez's debut album, On the 6, showcases the actress' sultry, versatile voice in a number of settings, including pop ballads, Latin pop, and R&B. Star producers like Sean "Puffy" Combs, Trackmasters, and Emilio Estefan, Jr. lend their talents to the album, making On the 6 a perfectly polished and varied album, which features a musical blend Lopez calls "Latin soul." Smooth ballads such as "Should've Never," "Too Late," "Could This Be Love," and "No Me Ames," a duet with Latin superstar Marc Anthony, dominate the album's first half; while these songs show off the gentler side of Lopez's vocal gifts, they tend to sound too similar. It's on the R&B and Latin-tinged tracks where Lopez really shines. Along with the insistent first single "If You Had My Love," cuts like "Feelin' So Good" and "Let's Get Loud" have a fiery, soulful sound more in keeping with Lopez's public persona. On the 6's second half capitalizes on this spicy, upbeat side, particularly on "Waiting for Tonight" and "Open off My Love," which draws inspiration from rap, R&B, and Latin styles with its sparse arrangement of horns, keyboards, and beats. The tropical remix of "No Me Ames" and "Una Noche Mas," the Spanish version of "Waiting for Tonight," emphasize Lopez's distinctive heritage, which elevates On the 6 from a star's vanity project to an individual but accessible work of pop songcraft by a widely talented performer.
