 Die Tatsache, daß das vierte Album von Alice Cooper das eingängige "Halo of Flies" enthält, ist allein schon Grund genug, diese CD zu kaufen, selbst wenn der Rest Schrott wäre. Obwohl seine anderen Platten mehr Hits enthielten, zählt dieses Album zu den anerkannten und etablierten Klassikern des Rock. Laut, angeberisch, schlampig und aggressiv -- die Sorte Musik, von der man schmutzige Finger bekommt. Coopers Schock-Rock-Ästhetik steht hier in voller Blüte, und "Dead Babies" zeigt, wie zufrieden er mit seinem Erfolgsrezept aus hartem Rock, Geschmacklosigkeit und Vorstellungen außerhalb des geistigen Horizonts des amerikanischen Durchschnittsbürgers war. Der Titelsong gibt einen Vorgeschmack auf zukünftige Ereignisse und bereitete den Boden für derart unterschiedliche Stücke wie "Only Women Bleed" und "No More Mr. Nice Guy". Anfangs noch verachtet von der "wir-sind-geiler-als-ihr"-Fraktion, ist Killer ein Grund dafür, daß Cooper heute als der Pionier angesehen wird, der er war. --Steve Gdula

Noch bevor Alice Cooper mit „School's Out" Berühmtheit erreichen sollte veröffentlichte die Band im Jahr 1971 das Werk Killer mit einer Boa Constrictor, wie sie bei den an Horrorfilme erinnernden Konzerten der Band eingesetzt wurde. Die Band zeigte die Tendenz sich von den Riffs des Garagenrocks weg hin zu komplexeren Arrangements zu bewegen. Exemplarisch hört man dies im acht Minuten Werk „Halo of Flies" schon eindeutig.

Mit dem Titel „Desperado" (nicht zu verwechseln mit dem gleichnamigen Song der durch die Eagles bekannt wurde) gab es eine düstere Verbeugung vor dem unlängst verstorbenen Jim Morrison. Der Song mit spanischer Gitarre passt zwar nicht zum Image der Horror-Schocker, malt jedoch beeindruckend das Bild eines Westernhelden auf dem Weg zum letzten Duell.

Mit Killer sollte es der Band gelingen zur meistgehassten Rockgruppe Amerikas zu werden. Jedenfalls wenn man die Aussagen von religiösen Gruppen und Kulturkritikern zu Grunde legt. Die aufstrebende Jugend sah das naturgemäß ganz anders und machte das Album erfolgreich.

Das Audio Fidelity Re-Issue erscheint als 24-Karat-Gold-CD mit HDCD-Codierung und fortlaufender Seriennummer.

Following on the heels of Audio Fidelity's hugely successful "School's Out" comes the 1971 Alice Cooper classic, "Killer".  Alice is in top form vocally, and the individual songs on 'Killer' are strong and memorable.  "Halo of Flies", an absolute masterpiece , would be reason enough to want this essential piece of the rock canon. The band's stage show dealt with the macabre, and such tracks as "Dead Babies" and the title track fit in perfectly. Other songs were even more exceptional, such as the concert favorite "Under My Wheels," the melodic yet gritty "Be My Lover," and the tribute to their fallen friend Jim Morrison, "Desperado."   "You Drive Me Nervous" and "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" showed that Alice Cooper hadn't completely abandoned their early garage-rock direction. With "Killer", Alice Cooper became one of the world's top rock bands and concert attractions.

Many fans believe this to be Alice Cooper's greatest album, and it is hard to argue. This is a hard rocking raucous foot stomping romp from beginning to end.

Alice Cooper wasted little time following up the breakthrough success of Love It to Death with another album released the same year, Killer. Again, producer Bob Ezrin was on board and helps the group solidify their heavy rock (yet wide-ranging) style even further. The band's stage show dealt with the macabre, and such disturbing tracks as "Dead Babies" and the title track fit in perfectly. Other songs were even more exceptional, such as the perennial barnstorming concert standard "Under My Wheels," the melodic yet gritty "Be My Lover," and the tribute to their fallen friend Jim Morrison, "Desperado." The long and winding "Halo of Flies" correctly hinted that the band would be tackling more complex song structures on future albums, while "You Drive Me Nervous" and "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" showed that Alice Cooper hadn't completely abandoned their early garage rock direction. With Killer, they became one of the world's top rock bands and concert attractions; it rewarded them as being among the most notorious and misunderstood entertainers, thoroughly despised by grownups.
