58 Bemerkenswert an dieser Doppel-CD ist die generalstabsmäßig geplante weltweite Marketing- und Promotion-Kampagne, mit der diese "neue Platte" der Beatles fünfzehn Jahre(!) nach John Lennons Tod rechtzeitig zum lukrativen Weihnachts-geschäft in die Charts gepusht wurde. Neu - daß ich nicht lache! Lediglich die grausig langweilige Single "Free As A Bird", auf einem Lennon-Demo aufbauend, erfüllt diesen "Anspruch". Der Rest sind historische Aufnahmen, Kellerdemos, TV-Livemitschnitte und alternative Versionen bekannter Tracks sowie Interview-O-Töne als grausiges Sammelsurium. So wird Scheiße vergoldet. Eine nette historische Schlagerplatte ohne praktischen Nährwert.

Daß die Beatles-Ära ab '68 dem Ende zuging, davon verrät die Doppel-CD "Anthology 3" herzlich wenig. Die zweieinhalb Stunden Musik der "White Album"-, "Let It Be"- und "Abbey Road"-Zeit lassen in 50 Stücken das Genie der vier aufblitzen. So dürfte die dritte Folge die Verkaufszahlen der ersten beiden - weltweit 13 Millionen - deutlich steigern. Besser als ein "neuer" John-Lennon-Track ist hier allemal "Cry Baby Cry", eine federleichte Lennon-Ballade als erster Take. Auch die Akustikversion George Harrisons von "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" zeigt schon - ohne Solo-Gitarre und sonstiges Beiwerk - die pure Magie des späteren Klassikers. Gänsehaut provoziert der geniale Satzgesang zu "Because"; da trällern sie a cappella schöner als Lerchen. Ganz putzig, aber nur marginal anders als die offizielle Variante, ist etwa das hübsche "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da". Dafür zeigt das spätere Monster-Rockstück "Helter Skelter" als noch sehr rohe R&B-Jamsession, wie weit der Weg von der Idee zur plattenreifen Version doch sein konnte. Und dies macht den Reiz aus. Hier gibt's "The Long And Winding Road", das Phil Spector mit Orchester aufplusterte, ganz schlicht. Prägnante Harrison-Demos zeigen, daß "The Quiet One" Vorarbeiten ernster nahm als Mc Cartney und Lennon mit lässig hingeschlenzten Entwürfen. Im Studio hingegen liefen die beiden zu Top-Form auf - wie Lennon in der Songprobe für "Come Together" und McCartney bei "Blackbird". "Anthology 3" ist das triumphale Finale einer beispiellosen Karriere. ** Klang: 03-04

Was soll man da noch sagen: Folge 3 des CD-Nachlasses dürfte wie die Vorgänger die Pop-Gemeinde spalten: Die Fans der Fab Four werden sich die Finger lecken nach den 50 bislang unveröffentlichten Alternativ- oder Demo-Versionen, Outtakes oder Jam-Sessions aus den Jahren 1968-70. Puristen und Neider werden wieder über Ausschlacht-Kommerz nörgeln. Fest steht: Die Acoustic-Version von ""While My Guitar ..." oder die Blouesfassung von "Helter Skelter" sind Rohdiamanten von zeitlosem Wert. Und die Klangqualität liegt teilweise überraschend hoch. The first in a series of three double-CD sets of previously unreleased and rare Beatles material, released in conjunction with the mammoth Anthology video documentary. This covers the late '50s to the end of 1964, mixing studio outtakes, live performances, primitive recordings from the Quarrymen/Silver Beatles days, excerpts from the famous 1962 Decca audition, the most notable 1961 Tony Sheridan-era recordings, and brief spoken bits from interviews. Although this material is undeniably of vast historical importance, it can't be placed in the same company as the Beatles' proper albums, in either cohesion or quality. While the studio outtakes (many never even heard on bootleg) are the most enticing items, these are almost exclusively alternate versions of songs they placed on their official releases (the most notable exceptions being the 1964 R&B cover "Leave My Kitten Alone," the 1962 demo "How Do You Do It," and the unimpressive 1964 Harrison original "You Know What to Do"). Sometimes the differences are quite interesting (a much more electric-oriented version of "And I Love Her," for example), but the alternates also illustrate how the group were virtually unerring in selecting the best arrangement and take of their songs for the final versions. The pre-1962 items are sometimes taken from private rehearsal tapes of primitive fidelity and are really of archival value only. One could go on at great length about the many curiosities and finds unearthed by this compilation, but for most general consumers, two observations may suffice. It does not stand up to the Beatles' fully conceived albums (even Live at the BBC), but the Beatles' scraps and leavings are more interesting than over 95 percent of other performers' best work. By that standard, this must be judged a worthwhile collection, especially (but not solely) for dedicated Beatles fans.
